Byrd Expedition Completes Task
Windblown Good-Bye To Byrd’s Antarctic Ship
Official Navy photos taken during Admiral Byrd's expedition to the South Polar area show: 1. Ice-breaker "Northwind" blazing a trail through Antarctic ice. 2. Helicopter retuning to ship after observation flight. 3. Submarine "Sennet" trapped by ice packs, being freed by crew of the "Northwind".
Wives and sweethearts of crewmen of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition wave farewell as the USS Pine Island departs from Norfolk, Va. The Navy craft is one of four in the expedition known as "Operation High Jump" which polar explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd will command.
